WASHINGTON (AP) — The Afghan-American community in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia issued a statement Monday condemning last week’s attack on two National Guard members in the nation’s capital and expressing solidarity with the victims and their families.

In the statement, community leaders said they “stand in solemn remembrance” of Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, who was fatally shot, and offered prayers for the recovery of Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, who remains hospitalized. The group said the soldiers’ “courage and dedication to protecting all Americans, including Afghan-American families who found safety in this country, command our deepest respect.”

The community condemned the attack “in the strongest possible terms,” calling it a tragedy that has caused “deep sorrow” among Afghan Americans across the region.

The statement emphasized the decades-long contributions of Afghan immigrants and refugees to U.S. society, noting that many in the community have personally endured war, violence and displacement. “The actions of one individual must never define or be used to punish an entire community,” the group said.

Leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to the United States, describing Afghan Americans as “proud” citizens and residents who remain dedicated to the nation’s “safety, unity and future.” The community said it stands ready to work with neighbors and public officials to ensure all communities “feel protected, valued and able to thrive.”

The statement concluded with a call for unity in the wake of the attack. “May this tragedy strengthen our resolve to build a more compassionate, peaceful and united America for all,” it read.
