DHS to Screen Immigrants’ Social Media for Antisemitic Content
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced today that it will start monitoring immigrants’ social media accounts for antisemitic activities, using this as a criterion to deny immigration requests.
This new policy, implemented by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), involves evaluating social media content posted by foreign nationals. Support for, promotion, or encouragement of antisemitic terrorism or physical harassment of Jewish individuals will be considered a negative factor during immigration evaluations.
According to an official statement from DHS, the measure will immediately affect all foreign nationals applying for permanent residency, international students, and individuals affiliated with educational institutions linked to antisemitic activities.
Tricia McLaughlin, DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs, stated: “There is no place in the United States for supporters or promoters of terrorism. We have no obligation to admit such individuals into our country.” She emphasized that abusing freedom of expression to incite antisemitic violence or terrorism is unacceptable and will result in the denial of immigration applications.
This action aligns with executive orders from the Trump administration aimed at combating antisemitism and protecting national security by addressing ideologies and organizations such as Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Hezbollah, and the Houthis.
The directive is effective immediately as of April 9, 2025.
