Faisal Karimi is an award-winning journalist, entrepreneur, and journalism educator with over 23 years of professional and academic experience in Afghanistan, Europe, and the United States.

Background

Faisal Karimi is an alumni of  John S. Knight Journalism Fellowship at Stanford University, Google News Initiative (GNI) and Alfred Friendly Press Partners Fellowship at Missouri School of Journalism. He holds a master’s degree in New Media Studies from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China and a bachelor’s degree in Journalism from Herat University. He has also pursued advanced studies at the School of Journalism at San Jose State University in California and has worked as a media researcher at the Human Rights Institute of San Jose State University, Internews Network, and as the Asia-Pacific regional coordinator at the Global Forum for Media Development (GFMD).

His work has been recognized for its impact on promoting freedom of expression, journalism education, women’s rights, and the state of the media in Afghanistan. As the founder and director of the Afghanistan Institute for Research and Media Studies, Karimi has led significant projects, including the Afghanistan Women’s News Agency in exile, which provides critical coverage of women’s issues in Afghanistan. Before the Taliban takeover, he was a journalism professor at Herat University, where he trained a new generation of journalists in Afghanistan
