Nowruz Media

Nowruz Media is a civic, non-profit, and community-driven news platform dedicated to serving Afghan immigrants and communities in San Francisco Bay Area and Northern California. Nowruz was established April in 2024, after 9 months participatory design process and information needs assessments that involved hundreds of Afghan immigrant and community leaders in Sacramento metropolitan area and San Francisco Bay Area.

All editorial priorities and content distribution strategies of Nowruz Media have been shaped based on what we have heard and continue to hear through ongoing conversations with the communities we cover.

Nowruz's mission is to empower Afghan immigrants and communities in California through community-driven journalism that addresses their unique needs and challenges, celebrates their achievements, and amplifies their voices, helping them thrive in the United States.

Our Journalism Model

Nowruz Media is inspired by the participatory journalism model of Listening Post Collective. The pre-launch phase of Nowruz was supported by Listening Post Collective (LPC) and the Google News Initiative.
